Your phone felt fast when it was new. A couple of years later, apps take longer to open and the keyboard lags. Before you buy a new one, it helps to know what’s really going on.
1. A worn battery
As a battery ages, it can’t deliver peak power reliably. To prevent sudden shutdowns, iPhones can manage performance when the battery is degraded — which can make the phone feel slower. Check Settings › Battery › Battery Health. A battery replacement often makes an older iPhone feel noticeably quicker.
2. Storage is almost full
When storage is nearly full, the system has less room to work. Aim to keep at least 10–15% free. Offload unused apps, clear large videos, and use iCloud Photos or a computer backup.
3. Too many apps running in the background
Background app refresh, location services and widgets all use resources. Turn off what you don’t need under Settings › General › Background App Refresh.
4. Software updates
Updates bring security fixes and new features, but newer software can ask more of older hardware. Keep your phone updated for security, and give it a day after a major update to finish background indexing.
5. Hardware damage
Drops and liquid can damage components and cause lag, freezing or random restarts. If your phone got wet or was dropped before the slowdown started, a professional diagnostic is worth it.
